Thesis: Just as other professional fields, Information Technology are faced with special ethical challenges that if not solved, may lead to both financial, and public relation losses, these challenges range from the much hyped cyber orchestrated crimes, to some widely ignored health issues in the IF environments, it is imperative for every IT professional to exercise best practices in IT ethics.
Information Technology (IT) encompasses all aspects of computing. It is the use of systems like computers for storing, retrieving, and sending information. It is also the application of computers and telecommunication equipment such as television and telephones which are generated by several industries .the human race has become over reliant on information technology for their daily operations such health, business and production. Hilbert and Lopez discovered that the technological change had become exponential as in the Moore’s law. Actually the exponential equation showed that machines capacity to compute information rose almost by double for every fourteen months between the year 1986 and the year 2007 (Rikowski, 2010). Globally we can see that the human race is over reliant to information technology system for storing massive quantities of data. Today everyone is relying on information technology for daily operations. Some individuals conduct their business by the use of information technology. Where people sell and buy what physically seeing each other (Tavani, 2011). All the transaction occurs through information systems. Education has also been computerized where we have scholars paying their fees, reading and doing their exams with the help of information system. As a result, the content passed through by the use of information technology must be guided by a Concept of good and wrong that is ethics. The philosophical ethics states what the best ways for the humans to live are and defines what is wrong or right in a particular circumstance. Information ethics may be defined as “a branch of ethics focusing on the relationships between the creation, dissemination, organization, and use of data, alongside the moral and ethical standards codes that governin human conduct in the society.”
The information society has to establish a foundation based on ethics that promotes just, equal and accountable practices by both the owners and users of the information technology platforms. The core issue of ethics rotates around ownership, security, privacy, access and community perceptive. This paper focuses on the ethical dimension of information technology as spelled out for all IT professionals (Brennan & Johnson, 2004).
Ethical issues in IT
Information technology ethics is just like other ethics in other different fields; worldwide people live and work by the use of information technology, and this over dependence on information technology largely affects moral values as well as cultural practices which bring the importance of revisiting the areas of information technology code of ethics and behavior which is a social responsibility (Rikowski, 2010). However, this effort to harmonize the IT code of ethics has born fewer fruits because of the difference in development levels between the highly developed, developed and developing nations. It poses an ethical challenge because of the existence of difference living conditions, religion and cultural perception. Actually the use of IT ethics takes significant positions as nations try to safeguard its people of moral decay and degradation. However, there are certain issues that elicit ethical debates of a universal nature, these include Cybercrime, hacking, spamming, generating computer viruses, IT employee-employer relationships, vendor-client issues, employee monitoring over emails, and the phenomenon of the digital divide (Ibid).
