Since then, a great deal of evidence has been highlighted to support the relationship between home chaos and children’s emotional and behavioral problems, and the relation to their academic outcomes. From this perspective, it would be important to explore the empirical evidence of developmental science to illuminate the concepts in social psychology of education. Chaotic homes and socio-economic standards have been shown to mediate stability of cognitive, verbal, and nonverbal skills among children. This paper represents a broad of literature about the chaotic home environment and the emotional implication that may influence their academic environment. It discusses the evidence as outlined in the literature, highlights their methodology, findings, and draws conclusions based on the findings.

 

Chaotic Homes and Academic Achievement

 

Chaos at home and the socioeconomic status have a profound effect on the development in childhood. Stephen A. Petrill et al conducted a research to examine whether the two variables mediate an environmental variance associated with the cognitive function simultaneously, and their linkage to the genetic influences. In this research, cognitive development was investigated among children in the ages of 3 years and 4 years in same sex fraternal twins, and identical twins. Verbal and non-verbal skills were tested among the children. The parents SES were tested through questionnaires. After analyzing the results, it was found that chaos and socio-economic status mediated the stability of cognitive, verbal, and non-verbal skills among infants 3 to 4 years of age (Petrill et al, 244, 457).

 

There are various mechanisms through which being in a chaotic home environment may contribute to relatively poor behavioral and cognitive outcomes in children. In less crowded homes, parents tend to be more verbally responsive to the children, compared to more crowded homes. This phenomenon may contribute to relatively more complexity of the parents’ speech and children’s speech. On the other hand, children may benefit from household chaos by developing mechanisms to filter out undesired stimuli; this may be applied in to other setting such as in the classroom which could be less adaptive (Jaffee et al, 2012).
