Prostate cancer that develops in the prostate gland; this is a part of the male reproductive system with its core function being secretion of the alkaline fluid that mixes with semen during ejaculation. Although there are aggressive prostate cancers, most of them are slow growing. At times, the cancer cells in the prostate may spread to other parts such as the lymph nodes and the bones; a process known as metastasis. The cancer manifest in the form of pain, problems during sexual intercourse, difficulty in urinating, and erectile dysfunction. Detection rates vary distinctly across the world with high prevalence in South and East Asia. Detection rates in Europe and the US are extremely low. This cancer is common in men over 50 years. It is a global phenomenon, being the sixth leading cause for cancer mortality. The cancer is common in the developed nations but the scourge in picking up developing nations (Madabhushi, 2010). The most implicated causes include genetics and lifestyle. The most common approaches in indicating prostate cancer include symptoms, biopsy, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), and physical examination (Brawley & Gansler, 2010, pg. 69). Nevertheless, the PSA is extremely controversial with prospects indicating that it merely decreases mortality. The most regarded management strategies in prostate cancer may be dictated by the severity of the condition and active surveillance can be used in case of low-risk tumors (Chang, 2004, pg. 86). Curative approaches include surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and brachytherapy (Chang, 2004, pg. 56). Most of the methods used in treatment of prostate cancer come with adverse effects and the decision to treat a localized prostate cancer is a patient trade-off between the prospective beneficial and harmful effects.
