Here’s a snippet of the essay.

Usability of software may be described as the measure of interface quality which refers to the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction with its performance in given tasks. Evaluating software usability has become an essential element of the process of system development, and various methods have been developed to carry out evaluation.

The Concept of Usability

Over time, the concept of software usability has been described in various ways. Some of the most renowned descriptions have been based on semantics, features, and operations. In terms of semantics, usability has been matched with terms like ‘user friendliness’ or ‘ease of use’ without a formal definition of the properties of the software. As regards features, usability has been equated to either presence or absence of certain elements in the user interface like icons, windows, pointing devices, or menus. Operations points to the performance and effective levels as manifest by users for particular environmental scenarios and tasks. The definition based on semantics has been regarded as useless by designers since it presents neither a perspective for evaluators or useful guidance to designers. The feature-based construct is founded on an assumption that usability is the essence of an application which is false since users vary between environments. Therefore, the operational definition has been the most applied by professionals (, 2011).

Criteria for Evaluating Usability

There are various methods of assessing software usability. The methods depend on available resources, ability and preference, evaluator experience, and the stage of development of the tools being reviewed. In this regard, there are user-based method, expert-based method, and model-based method.
