Here’s a snippet of the essay.
The civil war in America began because of the rigid differences between the slave holding southern states and the free north over the national government power to prohibit slavery in regions that had not yet become states. When Lincoln was elected as president in 1860 being the first republican president on a stand to abolish slavery in his territories, eleven states in the south region seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate states of America. The incoming administration led by Lincoln and most of the people in the north declined to recognize the legality of the secession. They feared that the south actions would destroy democracy and establish a grave precedent that would ultimately divide America into many small unstable countries. Lincoln declared the acts of secession as illegal and asked for 500000 soldiers from the congress to fight what seemed to be a threatening aggressive rebellion. For a period of four years, between 1861-1865, the United States was in a civil. The civil war was a great national tragedy with proportions that were unimaginable. The lives of more than six hundred thousand soldiers were lost and millions more injured, huge areas in the south were destroyed by brutal battles and the American union almost collapsed the confederate forces.
