Pollutants are substances that can harm the environment and have a negative impact on human health. One example of such pollutants is toxic waste material, whose information has hit global and local news, and the information about it is available in the local media. Also known as hazardous material, toxic waste material concerns everyone because the can result to injury, death, or birth defects on living organisms. These materials spread easily to contaminate rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere. Hazardous wastes come from poisonous byproducts from industries, farming, construction, laboratories, hospitals, city septic systems, and automotive garages. They come in the form of liquids, solids, and sludge and comprise chemicals, radiation, heavy metals or dangerous pathogens (Miller & Miller, 2001).
Toxic wastes also contain carcinogens exposure to which at high frequency could cause cancer. People contact these toxins when they are buried in the ground, in ground water which gives drinking water, through stream run off, or in floodwaters as experienced during the Hurricane Katrina. Some toxins like mercury could persist and accumulate in the environment. Bioaccumulation in both marine and freshwater ecosystems has resulted to exposure to humans through the predatory fish which has become a prime source of mercury in human diet (Ibid).
Toxic waste material is managed through disposal – placement onto the land. Disposal facilities contain the waste permanently to avoid the release into the environment. The most commonly used disposal method involves placement in land units such as landfills, waste piles, treatment units, surface impoundment, or an injection well. However, land disposal is regulated by the EPA’s Land Disposal Restriction program (Miller & Miller, 2001, p. 55).
